Derek Parra

Like many kids in Southern California, Derek Parra started roller skating for fun, at an early age. But what was just a “good time” became the entre into a life’s dream. In 1984 Derek began roller skating and by 1996 he had become the most decorated athlete in the history of the sport.

At the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, UT, Parra became the first Mexican American to win a Winter Olympic medal, earning a Gold in the 1500m and a Silver in the 5000m.

Derek coaches the WhIP (Wheels on Ice) Program.  This program takes world class inline skaters and helps them transition from wheels to blades, allowing him to give new skaters the chance to follow their own Olympic dreams.

U.S. Speed Skating Team Members

Jeff Simon

Jeff Simon is an up-and-coming short track skater with the desire and ability to go far. After switching from inline skating (where he was a 4-time national medalist), Simon moved to the ice in the hopes to making an Olympic team. In 2003, Jeff went on to win a silver medal at the 2007 World Junior Short Track Championships and came in 5th overall—the best finish by an American since 1999.  Jeff is a member of the 2007-2008 World Champion Men’s Short Track Team. Jeff currently trains in Salt Lake City with the U.S. National Short Track Training Program.

Travis Jayner

Travis Jayner is not your typical kid who grew up in Canada. Although he enjoyed hockey, skiing, soccer and golf, Jayner, who was born in New Brunswick Canada to American parents, loved skating. Travis began skating when he was 5 years old at the prompting of his father who was a speedskater as a child.  Jayner is a well rounded athlete competing in the 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m relay team.  He has consistently finished in the top ten in National and World Cup events.  Travis achieved one of his dreams when he not only made the World Short Track team in the 2006/2007 season, but won a bronze medal at the world championships. Travis trains with the U.S. Short Track National Training Program in Salt Lake City, UT.

Jayner is bi-lingual (French-English) and has been studying city planning at McGill University (Montreal, Canada) and Concordia University.

Kimberly Derrick

Kimberly Derrick grew up on Inline skates. From the age of 6 to 18 Kimberly dominated the women’s Inline world winning and placing in numerous National Championships.  Derrick switched to ice when she was 18 because she had always wanted to be on an Olympic Team.

Kimberly took the ice world on with the same ferocity she did the Inline world.  In 2006, she realized her dreams when she qualified for the Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.  Derrick is currently with the U.S. National Training Team in Salt Lake City, UT where she is training for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada.
